I just came back from a 10 days trip to Greece which was absolutely amazing. I visited Athens for a few days and then moved on to two of Greece’s most famous and beautiful islands: Mykonos and Santorini.
In this guide I’ll share my insights on my island hopping trip between Athens and these two gorgeous islands.
My itinerary:
DAY 1: Landing in Athens
The first day I spent checking in to my Airbnb flat in Athens and exploring its neighborhood. It was all about first impressions from the town.
DAY 2: Exploring Athens (City center)
I woke up early and ready to explore Athens! I started in Monastiraki square and its surroundings (not to miss a breakfast at iFeel café) and walked all the way to Syntagma square thru the Old market. Especially, what stood out the most for me was my visit to Little Kook, a circus themed tea house that was well-decorated inside and out.
DAY 3: More of Athens (Acropolis)
I started the day by visiting the Acropolis Museum to warm up for the visit of the Acropolis itself. From the Acropolis you will also see stunning view of the town. Afterwards, I continued to explore Plaka, the prettiest neighborhood in town and ate in one of its authentic Taverns.
DAY 4: Exploring Athens + evening flight to Mykonos
I had a late evening flight to Mykonos and therefore another 5ish hours to explore more of Athens. I checked out of my Airbnb and left the luggage at the host’s home. That was my favorite day in Athens since it felt very chill. I already seen and done everything I wanted to do and what was left is only to relax and enjoy. The perfect setting for that was the rooftop terrace of A for Athens that provides the most incredible view of the town and the Acropolis. Here is when the real island hopping begun! At the evening, I had my RyainAir flight to Mykonos and the next morning I woke up at a beautiful hotel.
DAY 5: Exploring Mykonos (The Old Town)
I woke up in Mykonos in the most beautiful setting! Walking out of my room led me straight to a pool and countryside view of the island. I took a taxi from the hotel to the Old Town and simply started walking on the small picture-perfect streets. Those streets led me to the port and the famous Windmills of Mykonos. You don’t really need a plan for Mykonos, just walk where the wind takes you, everywhere is pretty!
DAY 6: Mykonos beaches (Psarou + Petinos beach)
On my last day in Mykonos I changed a hotel because I wanted to see another part of the island. Sure enough, the new hotel was only 15 minute walk from the beach. I visited two beaches that were next to each other, Psarou and Petinos beach.
DAY 7: Morning ferry to Santorini + Exploring Oia
I woke up early to catch the ferry to the dreamy island of Santorini. The boat ride took about 2:30 hours. When I arrived, the taxi was waiting for me to drive me to my hotel in Oia. My hotel in Oia was beautiful and luxurious. I spent the rest of the day exploring Oia’s beautiful boardwalk and enjoying the views.
DAY 8: Exploring Oia (Sunset watching)
The second day in Oia I spent chilling by the pool at the hotel and enjoying the stunning views Oia has to offer. One of the main attractions in Oia is overlooking the sunset from Amoudi Bay, which I therefore of course did, and really enjoyed the tranquility.
DAY 9: Fira (guided tour to the Volcano and hot springs)
The early hours of the morning I took a bus to Fira, checked in to my hotel and then took the Santorini cable ride to the Old Port. From the Old Port I had an organized 3-hour tour to the Volcano and the hot springs. To arrive to the Volcano I had to hike 3 kilometers each way which was exhausting but I did felt accomplished afterwards. After the tour, I went to to explore Fira which also offers incredible views just like Oia. Also, it was so nice to have lunch overlooking the sea.
DAY 10: Flight back to Athens -> flight back to my final destination
I had a connection flight to Athens before heading back home. That was the end to my island hopping trip.
Important tips:
- Flying from Athens to the islands with RyanAir can be extremely cheap and quick which saves up precious time.
- There’s no need to stay in those expensive hotels in Oia. If Oia is not in your budget, simply stay around Fira and take the 1.80 EURO bus to Oia.
- There is no flights between Mykonos and Santorini, therefore, ferry is your only option. It is also a good option since it’s only around 2:30h boat ride.
- Mykonos is known for its parties, but the crazy nightlife doesn’t start until middle of June.
- Visiting Mykonos in May is way cheaper than in June-August.
- Hotels in Mykonos normally provide airport or port transfers free of charge.
- Be prepared to do a lot of walking in Oia, since there is a lot of stairs and cars don’t access to the main boardwalk.

This is such a lovely post. I loved Greece. I never got to visit Mykonos, but we did Athens, Ios and were in Santorini and rented and ATV for 4 days, so we visited most of those beaches while we were there (but we didn’t see the volcanic site – next time, maybe). Your photos take me back! They’re really lovely! I’d love to return for a longer trip. 🙂

What a perfect guide for the greek islands! I\’\’ve only been to Samos and Crete so far but both Mykonos and santorini are on my list too ♥ Now I\’m a bit sad that it might be too late this year (prices for those islands are already extremely expensive..) but maybe next year then :-)xxxTinawww.styleappetite.com
