As much as I love big cities, sometimes everyone needs a break from the busy urban lifestyle. It is always interesting to visit small towns; Admiring the architecture, shop in the small boutiques, and have a glimps of the local’s lifestyle. Especially, I believe that in order to truly experience a country, you should also visit the countryside when possible.
These are my favorite city escapes in Europe:
1) Stratford Upon Avon, England, UK
Being William Shakespeare’s birthplace, this charming small town is the perfect escape for literature lovers. Located just about two hours away from London, it is best accessible by car. Certainly, Shakespeare’s House is the main attraction in town. The house is a restored 16th-century half-timbered. It is recommendable for visitors to book tickets and check the house’s opening hours in advance. Nonetheless, apart from learning about Shakespeare, you will also find yourself gazing at the beautiful medieval architecture and wandering the small streets.
2) Verona, Italy
It is impossible not to fall in love with Verona, home to the famous “Juliet’s balcony”. Indeed, there is something dreamy abut this city; Perhaps, it’s the fact that Verona has been the set for Shakespeare’s most romantic play or maybe the medieval architecture. Although Verona is not a small town, it still is the perfect escape from Venice which is always full of tourists. Also, another great reason to visit the city is its World Heritage Status by UNESCO which was awarded due to its urban structure and architecture.
3) Hohenschwangau, Germany
Many of you may have never heard of Hohenschwangau before, but that’s because it is mainly visited for Neuschwanstein Castle. The breathtaking castle is located above the village and about two hours away from Munich. The castle is mostly known for being the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Therefore, it is a must-visit for anyone visiting Munich.
4) Ghent, Belgium
Ghent is located in the Flemish region of Belgium and easily accessible by train from Brussels. It is worth a visit due to its romantic canals, alongside with its rich history. In addition, Ghent is the perfect escape because of the relaxed atmosphere and the medieval 15th century architecture style that remained intact.
5) Interlaken, Switzerland
Without a doubt, Interlaken is Switzerland’s hidden gem. The resort town is located on the Aare river, with a perfect view of the Alps. The Harder Kulm, a high viewpoint overlooking the alps, is the city’s most popular attraction. Additionally, Interlaken is accessible by train from Zurich or Bern. Thus, it is the perfect getaway from Switzerland’s busy towns.
6) Honfleur, France
Honfleur is located in Normandy, on the northern coast of France which is about two hours drive from Paris. During summertime, visitors can relax at the beautiful beach. Whereas, during all seasons its beautiful harbour will enchant you. The best way to visit Honfleur is as a day trip from Le Havre or Etretat.

All of it looks fantastic, but I really love the Italy shot!
You are right, the countryside holds so much treasures! Though I wouldn’t consider Verona a small city, I love all your picks.
